How to Live a Healthy Lifestyle
Maintain your ideal weight.
For many folks, the first lifestyle change towards wellness is achieving a healthy weight and maintaining it. Determine if you are overweight by getting a body fat analysis and having your physician check your body mass index. If you are at an unhealthy weight for your height, age, and build, you may be at risk for serious illnesses such as diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. In addition, your quality of life may be compromised.
Eat a variety of nutritious foods.
Plan meals that include items from the five main food groups. This means avoiding foods that are high in sodium, sugars, and saturated fats. Include more lean proteins, whole grains, or non-fat and low-fat dairy in your daily diet and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.
Get routine medical exams.
Don’t dismiss your annual physical exam. Keep up with lab tests and necessary health screenings to rule out or identify and treat any budding medical concerns. Routine colonoscopies, mammograms, EKGs, and other tests can save your life.
Eliminate the negatives.
Surround yourself with positive influences and supportive relationships. Make sure you have healthy relationships. The people closest to you should treat you with respect and love. This is an important step in learning how to be healthy.
Be active every day.
Find a physical activity you enjoy, and make it a regular part of your daily routine. Exercise every day for at least 30 minutes at a time. Take an invigorating walk, take a yoga class, go for a swim, or join a sports team. Getting active is an essential lifestyle change if you are currently sedentary.
Find ways to decompress.
Knowing how to live healthy means being able to manage stress. Mental and emotional health is just as important as physical health; it all goes hand in hand. Find positive ways of working through stressful times. Deep breathing drills, yoga, meditation, and regular exercise are very effective ways to de-stress. If you are feeling overwhelmed, or if your stress level has gotten out of your control, seek professional help.
Quit smoking, or do not start.
Quitting smoking—or not starting in the first place—is the best course of action. Smoking is a potentially deadly habit, responsible for serious and preventable diseases like lung cancer, emphysema, and other smoking-related ailments. Also, avoid secondhand smoke that is also very hazardous to your health.
