Modern medical imaging is a valuable tool that provides technicians and physicians the ability to view internal organs, tissues, and other body parts, for the purposes of diagnosis and treatment. Common Imaging used in emergency medical departments include X-ray, CT scans, and ultrasounds.
X-rays
X-ray imaging is used to help doctors view internal body areas without making an incision. This standard test is a key element used to identify, diagnose, and treat a wide variety of medical conditions.
At Angleton ER, an X-ray may be performed to:
- View an internal area or body part where a patient feels pain
- Evaluate an injury or trauma to a bone or joint
- Inspect the lungs for signs of pneumonia, infections, or signs of trauma
- And evaluation of many more conditions
CT Scan (computerized tomography)
A CT or CAT scan uses computers and revolving X-ray machines to capture cross-sectional body images. This technology provides more detailed images than standard X-ray images by providing a 3D image of many layers. They offer a clearer view of soft tissues, bones, and blood vessels throughout the diagnosis of infections, muscle disorders, and bone fractures.
CT images are used to:
- Diagnose inflammation and diseases inside the body
- Identify the location of benign and cancerous growths and tumors
- Examine blood vessels and other internal structures
- Evaluate injuries and internal bleeding
- Guide surgeries and biopsies
- Monitor the effectiveness of a treatment method
- Evaluate pain and post-operative complications
Ultrasound
Also known as a sonogram, or sonography, an ultrasound scan involves the use of high-frequency sound waves to capture live internal body images. Ultrasound technology allows a doctor to view medical conditions in blood vessels, tissues, and organs, without exploratory surgery. Unlike X-ray and CT scans, ultrasound uses no radiation. Therefore, ultrasound is the preferred method for monitoring a developing fetus during pregnancy.
A doctor may order an ultrasound to rule out problems with a pregnancy, but it can also be used to determine the source of pain, inflammation, or other symptoms that make it necessary for the doctor to acquire an internal view.
