Halloween is one of the most fun days of the year for children and adults. But behind the scary masks, ghoulish costumes, and yummy candy, there may be a terrifying reality: the risk of accidents that can land you in the ER.

Each Halloween, our staff, sees an increase in car accidents, deep cuts from pumpkin carving, severe allergic reactions, and injuries due to falls.

To help you enjoy your trick-or-treating and Halloween parties instead of visiting us, we’ve prepared a simple list of safety tips so you and your family can stay safe.

Trick-Or-Treating Safety Tips

• Don’t allow your children to walk alone in the dark. Instead, try organizing a group with some neighbors; this will add to the fun and help keep your children safe.
• Limit your trick-or-treating route to neighborhoods you are familiar with
• Make sure your cell phone has a full battery and use the flashlight when streets are dark
• Obey street signs, make sure you walk on the left side of the road facing traffic, use crosswalks, and always look both ways before crossing the street
• Wear reflective gear, especially if you are wearing a dark costume

• Please don’t allow your children to eat any candy before you get a chance to inspect it
• If your child has food allergies, make sure you remove and dispose of any candy or goodies that may contain allergens
• Divide the loot and store the candy in a place out of reach so your children don’t overeat sugar

• Pick bright or light-colored costumes that drivers can easily see
• Avoid long costumes that can increase the risk of tripping and falling
• If your costume includes a mask, make sure it fits well, and you can see clearly through it
• Consider taking glow sticks with you while out in the street; this will make you more visible to drivers
• Choose your makeup wisely, always read the list of ingredients, and avoid using any makeup that may contain toxic dyes or components
• Choose flame-retardant fabrics for your costume
• Beware of wigs and other head accessories that may impair your ability to see
• Avoid loose or dangling costumes, as these can be a fall hazard
