PHE Extension for Medicare Patients

Last month the Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra announced he was once again extending the Public Health Emergency (PHE) due to COVID-19.

What is a PHE?

Declaring a Public Health Emergency provides hospitals, ERs, and other healthcare providers with the necessary support and protections to help manage a health crisis and guarantee continued coverage and protection against potential loss to Medicare beneficiaries.

The current PHE went into effect in January 2020. Since then, the PHE has received extensions, each lasting 90 days. A PHE can be extended as many times as needed. The latest extension will expire on October 15th, 2022. However, Mr. Becerra remains open to the possibility of extending the PHE even further based on available scientific data and the status of COVID-19 in the country.  At Angleton ER, the finest emergency room in Angleton, Texas, we believe in extending the very best healthcare options for our communities.  We hope to break down what this PHE extension means and our our Medicare patients can benefit for it.

How is This PHE Extension Beneficial to Medicare Patients

After the 2020 PHE came into effect, states could no longer determine Medicare and Medicaid eligibility.

When the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) ends, so does the enhanced federal funding program. When this happens, states will once again resume administering renewals for Medicare and Medicaid eligibility.

This means that many of the 80 million Americans enrolled could potentially lose their current benefits, including emergency care, when states redetermine their eligibility.

Therefore, the latest PHE extension ensures Medicare members can keep their current coverage benefits.

What the Future Holds

It’s unclear when the PHE will end definitively. However, the HHS Secretary promised to announce its termination at least 60-days before it is expected to expire so that states and healthcare providers can prepare.

Once the PHE ends, Angleton ER will continue advocating for the right to access to quality emergency care for all Texans, including Medicare beneficiaries.
